KI OTOKO
Ki Otoko is the artistic name of a creator born in Zaragoza. His work is built on an uncommon ability to observe, abstract and distil. When looking at an image, his attention is not directed only at the whole: he searches for the small features in which identity is concentrated, the details capable of changing an expression, a presence or the balance of a composition. From there, he removes what is secondary and retains what he considers essential.
This process gives rise to a restrained visual language in which every line, form and contrast follows a decision. The apparent simplicity of his work does not come from automatic reduction, but from a deliberate exercise in observation and synthesis. For Ki Otoko, simplifying means understanding an image well enough to know what can disappear without losing its character.

Between languages and cultures
Before developing this public stage of his artistic practice, Ki Otoko studied Translation and Interpreting at university. That training helps explain the way he relates to culture and ideas. Translation requires interpreting context, recognising nuance and carrying meaning across without reducing it to literal equivalence.
The same disposition appears in his creative process. He approaches cultural references with curiosity and attention, seeking to understand their codes before incorporating them into his visual language.
Ki Otoko/ Tree Man
Japanese art, aesthetics and thought hold an important place among his references. From this relationship comes the name Ki Otoko, which the artist connects with another of his artistic names: Tree Man. Both belong to the same creative identity.
Choosing a Japanese name is not intended to claim a cultural origin other than his own. Ki Otoko is an artist from Zaragoza. The name acts as an acknowledgement of a culture for which he holds deep admiration and respect, and whose approaches to form, emptiness, nature, time and essentiality resonate with his artistic sensibility.
Technique in the service of an idea
Alongside this conceptual ability is a remarkable degree of manual and technical skill, developed through different forms of artistic expression. For Ki Otoko, technique and concept are not separate territories: the former allows the latter to take material form with precision.
He observes, reduces, tests and adjusts until a work reaches the degree of tension and clarity he is seeking.
The beginning of a public trajectory
Ki Otoko’s body of work is still at an early stage of its public trajectory. Newartis sees this moment as an opportunity to introduce an artist while his language is beginning to take shape before a wider audience.
ZEN is one of those first presentations. The collection brings together works in which several recurring qualities are already emerging: synthesis, an interest in meaning, close attention to detail and a conscious relationship with Japanese culture.
